Ayurveda, explained

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a traditional system of natural wellbeing that began in India around 5,000 years ago. Its name comes from two Sanskrit words: ayur, meaning life, and veda, meaning knowledge. At its heart is one simple idea: wellbeing comes from keeping the body and mind in balance.

Rather than focusing on quick fixes, Ayurveda looks at the whole person and the rhythm of everyday life. It draws on plants, herbs and traditional formulations, alongside simple daily routines for diet, sleep and self-care. Think of it as a time-honoured approach to looking after yourself, gently and consistently.

  • 01

    Balance

Ayurveda sees wellbeing as a state of balance, and aims to keep the body and mind steady through the seasons and the demands of daily life.

  • 02

    Whole-person

It considers the person as a whole, taking in diet, sleep, activity and mood rather than looking at any one part in isolation.

  • 03

    Natural ingredients

Its preparations are built from plants, herbs, oils and other natural ingredients, made using traditional methods passed down over generations.

  • 04

    Daily ritual

Much of Ayurveda lives in small, repeated daily habits — the simple acts of care that, over time, support a sense of vitality and everyday wellbeing.

Ayurveda basics

The three doshas

In Ayurveda, three energies known as doshas — Vata, Pitta and Kapha — are present in everyone in a unique blend, and the aim is simply to keep your own mix in balance.

Air & Space

Vata

The energy of movement

Vata types tend to be light, quick and creative — lively in mind and body when in balance.

Kept in balanceIn Ayurveda, Vata is traditionally kept steady with warmth, routine and grounding, nourishing foods and oils.

Fire & Water

Pitta

The energy of transformation

Pitta types tend to be focused, driven and warm, with sharp energy and a strong sense of purpose.

Kept in balanceIn Ayurveda, Pitta is traditionally kept balanced with cooling foods, calm routines and time spent in nature.

Earth & Water

Kapha

The energy of structure

Kapha types tend to be calm, steady and grounded, with a settled, easy-going nature.

Kept in balanceIn Ayurveda, Kapha is traditionally kept lively with movement, warming spices and energising daily rituals.
